Portrait Gallery of the 17th Century

Thirty enormous 17th-century group portraits from the collections of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum have been brought together for the first time at Hermitage Amsterdam.

These 'brothers and sisters' of Rembrandt's 'Night Watch' are unique in the world and rarely seen due to their size. They show us regents, civic guards and merchants of different ranks, social classes and religions. Rembrandt's 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman' and portraits of civic guards by renowned artists including Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the works of art that are on view. Together they illustrate how the affluent and mighty of the 17th century in Amsterdam showed their pride in their city and themselves.
